A/Prof Martin J. Abrahamson

Martin J. Abrahamson, MD, is Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Director of the Division of Continuing Medical Education in the Department of Medicine and an active faculty member of the Endocrine Division, Department of Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He received his medical degree from University of Cape Town in Cape Town, South Africa, and completed his internship, residency and clinical fellowship in internal medicine and endocrinology at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, where he was a research fellow before joining the faculty of medicine at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital. Dr. Abrahamson was joint head of the Endocrine Unit in Cape Town before taking up a faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Hospital in 1992.

He joined the faculty at Joslin Diabetes Center in 1998 where he held positions as Chief of Adult Diabetes, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs until 2015. While at Joslin Diabetes Center, Dr. Abrahamson led the reorganization of the Adult Diabetes Section into multidisciplinary teams comprised of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurse educators, nutritionists, and exercise physiologists and spearheaded “pathways of care” for patients referred to Joslin (JoslinCare). He has co-authored guidelines for the pharmacological and perioperative management of patients with diabetes and management of hyperglycemic emergencies, and authored more than 80 papers, review articles and chapters related to diabetes. He currently serves as chair of the steering committee for the ASCEND program (Academy for Science and Continuing Education in Diabetes and Obesity), an international CME initiative.
Dr. Abrahamson’s research interests include the management of patients with diabetes, and use of technology to improve diabetes care and outcomes. Dr. Abrahamson is board certified in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, and is a Fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa. He has been cited regularly in Boston Magazine as one of Boston’s top doctors, and has delivered numerous invited lectures nationally and internationally on the management of diabetes. In 2010 he was the recipient of the Samuel Eichold II Memorial Award for contributions to Diabetes from the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Abrahamson has recently co-authored a book on diabetes with Dr. Sanjiv Chopra entitled “Conquer Your Diabetes: Prevention, Control, Remission”.

Prof Mark Zeidel

Mark Zeidel, M.D., is Herrman L. Blumgart Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Physician in Chief and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He has made important contributions to our understanding of how water and other small molecules cross biological membranes, how the kidney helps control body chemistry, as well as how the bladder functions to store and void urine, and has led several successful national initiatives in medical education. A national thought leader in quality improvement, he has pioneered the provision of highly reliable, cost-effective care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), where he helped BIDMC’s achieve of outstanding clinical outcomes, recognized by the American Hospital Association, Society for Critical Care Medicine, the Leapfrog Group, and the Department of Health and Human Services. He has received numerous awards, including election to the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians, the Robert H. Williams Distinguished Chair of Medicine Award from the Association of Professors of Medicine and the Robert Narins Award for Medical Education from the American Society of Nephrology.

Prof Sanjiv Chopra

Sanjiv Chopra, MD, is Professor of Medicine and served as Faculty Dean for Continu¬ing Medical Education at Harvard Medical School for 12 years. He serves as a Marshall Wolf Distinguished Clinician Educator Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Chopra has more than 170 publications and ten books to his credit. Dr. Chopra is Editor-in-Chief of the Hepatology Section of UpToDate, the most widely used electronic textbook in the world subscribed to by more than 1.5 million physicians in 195 countries.

He is a sought after inspirational speaker across the United States and abroad, addressing diverse audiences on topics related to medicine, leadership, happiness, and living with purpose.

He has received numerous awards, including:

1985

Recipient of the George W. Thorn Award for Outstanding Contribution to Clinical Education, presented by the Brigham & Women’s Hospital House staff.

1991

Recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award from the 1991 Graduating Class Harvard Medical School. The citation read: “Outstanding clinician, devoted teacher and mentor.  We thank you for your dedication to excellence in teaching.”

Dr Margaret “Molly” Hayes

Margaret “Molly” Hayes, MD, ATSF is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She is the director of the Medical Intensive Care Units at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical (BIDMC) Center, the co-chair of the Critical Care Executive Committee at BIDMC and the co-founder and co-director of the Center for Humanizing the ICU at BIDMC. She obtained her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and then completed Internal Medicine and Pulmonary and Critical Care training at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. She also served as Assistant Chief of Service (Chief Resident) for one year at Johns Hopkins. During that year she realized her passion for medical education and since then has taught in numerous CME courses. She also directs two highly rated Harvard Medical School CME courses – one on education and one on critical care. She is an active member of the American Thoracic Society, where she serves multiple educational roles. She is a deputy editor of CHEST Critical Care where she oversees invited content and medical education submissions. Dr. Hayes enjoys teaching learners of all levels and has won numerous local and national educator awards. Dr. Hayes has advanced training in medical education research and is passionate about critical thinking, adult learning theory and high stakes communication specifically around end of life in the intensive care unit. She is an ardent advocate for humanizing the ICU experience for patients, visitors, and staff. She has numerous publications on teaching communication skills as well as the importance of critical thinking in medicine. She is also interested in international education as the Director for External Education at the Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research and has travelled extensively teaching best practices in medical education.

Dr Yousif A’Rahim

Dr. Yousif A-Rahim is a world-class and nationally recognized leader in the field of gastroenterology and AI, with extensive experience in healthcare leadership and clinical practice. He is the Chief Medical Officer for Covenant Surgical Partners, Inc., a national physician services company that owns and operates 45 healthcare facilities across 20 states. In this role, he manages efforts to drive optimal clinical outcomes for Covenant ASCs and the entire company.

In addition to his role at Covenant, Dr. A-Rahim has extensive experience in healthcare leadership. He founded Pacific Endoscopy Center, an ambulatory surgery center in Hawaii, which has grown into four centers and has become the dominant provider of gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures in Hawaii. He has also been recognized as a “Leader to Know” by Becker’s ASC Review, the outpatient surgery industry’s leading healthcare publication.

Dr. A-Rahim is a part-time practicing gastroenterologist in Hawaii and at the VA Hospital in West Roxbury, MA. He is a Lecturer in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and has authored many scientific articles published in peer-reviewed medical journals.

In 2022, he authored Smarter Medicine: How Artificial Intelligence Will Make You Healthier, which explores how AI will soon be used to diagnose and treat diseases faster, cheaper, more accurately, and at a lower cost.

Prof A. Vathsala

Prof A Vathsala graduated with a BS degree from Auburn University, Alabama and studied Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, Tennessee, USA. She is trained in Internal Medicine in Singapore, in Renal Medicine at the Singapore General Hospital and in Transplantation at the University of Houston, Texas and the Cornell University School of Medicine, USA.

After completion of her training in transplantation, Prof Vathsala was Director of the kidney transplantation program at SGH. She joined NUS and NUH in 2008 as Head of Nephrology and later became Co-Director of the National University Centre for Organ Transplantation, NUH. She is passionate about the care of transplant patients and has been at the helm of many of the milestones in transplantation in Singapore, including combined ABO- and HLA-incompatible kidney transplantation and simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplant. She has research interests in many areas in the field of transplantation including alloantibodies, desensitization, pharmacokinetics and pharmacogenomics. She also has a special interest in preventive nephrology and diabetic kidney disease and initiated a programme at primary care to prevent progression of diabetic kidney disease which is now implemented nationwide. She has published widely and has received many awards for her clinical, teaching and research contributions.

In 2020, Prof Vathsala was appointed Head of the Department of Medicine (DOM) at NUS and NUH to provide leadership to the 11 medical subspecialties under the Department. As Head of Medicine at NUS, she is responsible for medical undergraduate education for Medicine modules at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (YLLSoM) as well as the 3rd Year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) Medicine Teaching Programme. She has reorganised the Undergraduate Education team to better support DOM’s education mission and introduced novel clinical teaching programs for YLLSoM undergraduates. These efforts have been rewarded by DOM garnering teaching excellence awards for Phase III and Phase V education in 2021, 2022 and 2023 for the first time in the Department’s history.

Under her leadership, DOM has made progress in optimising care to its patients, by embracing NUHS@Home, Inpatient Definitive Care for Medicine patients at the Emergency Department, Accountable Care and Telemedicine and has supported the expansion of Acute Medicine, Geriatric and Palliative care. Working with DOM specialists in Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Endocrinology, respectively, she is helming the establishment of Centres of Excellence in Digestive Health and Diabetes at NUH, while supporting NUHS’ efforts in population health in the Western cluster.

Professor Adam Lefstein

Martin J. Adj A/Prof Amelia Santosa

Dr Santosa graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2006 and subsequently obtained the Membership of the Royal College of Physician of Edinburgh, United Kingdom and her Master of Medicine degree from the National University of Singapore in 2010. She completed her specialist training in Rheumatology at the National University Hospital and is a member of the Section of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, Singapore. Dr. Santosa is core faculty member of the Internal Medicine Residency Programme. She oversees clinical services at the Department of Medicine and Division of Rheumatology, NUH.

Dr Catherine Ong

Dr Catherine W.M. ONG MBBS MRCP(UK) MMed (Int Med) PhD FAMS FRCP is Assistant Professor with the Department of Medicine at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Principal Investigator in iHealthtech NUS, Senior Consultant with the Division of Infectious Diseases in the National University Hospital and Visiting Consultant at the Singapore Tuberculosis Control Unit with both research and clinical interests in Tuberculosis. She serves in international journal editorial boards; as Associate Editor of the leading European Respiratory Journal, and Deputy Editor of the flagship International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases. Her other portfolios include: Secretary to the ESCMID Study Group for Mycobacterial Infections (ESGMYC) and expert reviewer to international funders such as the Wellcome Trust, UK MRC and ESCMID.

Catherine graduated in medicine from NUS in 2003 and during Infectious Diseases specialist training completed a full-time PhD in 2013 at Imperial College London under Professor Jon S. FRIEDLAND, funded by the National Medical Research Council (NMRC) on the competitive National Research Foundation - Ministry of Health Scholarship. Her laboratory focuses on Tuberculosis host-pathogen interactions, biomarker discovery including rapid tests and TB host-directed therapies in multi-national clinical trials. Her works are published in top journals such as the Lancet Infectious Diseases, ERJ and the Journal of Clinical Investigation. Work is funded by the NMRC, Institut-Merieux, National Centre for Infectious Diseases and NUS with grant income as Lead-PI of over SGD $12 million. Her research team of outstanding graduate students and research staff have won multiple national and international-level awards; notably from ECCMID, APCCMI and the Wellcome Trust.

On clinical aspects of TB, Catherine serves the Ministry of Health Singapore, and works with WHO Coordinating Centres and WHO itself. For her work, she received multiple national and international accolades. They include a Presidential Award prize at the American Society for Leukocyte Biology 2011, Keystone Symposia Global Health Travel Award by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation 2012, International Investigator Award by the Infectious Diseases Society of America 2013, NMRC Transition Award 2015, Institut Merieux-SIDS Young Investigator Award 2018 and NMRC Clinician Scientist Award 2018 with successful renewal in 2022.

Prof Dan Yock Young

Dr Dan Yock Young is currently the CEO of Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Jurong Community Hospital. He is also Associate Professor at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore and Senior Consultant at National University Health System.

Trained as a clinician scientist, his research interests include liver progenitor cells, their mechanistic roles and potential for therapeutic applications in liver failure, liver cancer and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. He is currently appointed as adjunct faculty of Cancer Science Institute, NUS and Genome Institute Singapore, ASTAR.

Dr Effie Chew

Dr Chew is head and senior consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine at the National University Hospital, Alexandra Hospital and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. She is also Assistant Professor at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore and Director of the NUHS Centre of Functional Mobility and Enabling Technologies and member of Rehabilitation Medicine Residency Advisory Committee.

Her research interests are in post-stroke neurorecovery and neuromodulation, technologies in rehabilitation particularly related to clinical adoption

A/Prof Jason Phua is a respiratory physician and intensivist practising at Alexandra Hospital (AH) and National University Hospital (NUH), Chief Executive Officer of AH, and Deputy Chief Executive (Clinical Transformation) of the National University Health System (NUHS). He is the Chair of the Asian Critical Care Clinical Trials (ACCCT) Group and the Co-Chair of the National Intensive Care Unit Repository (NICUR). He previously served as the Head of the Division of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at NUH, the President of the Society of Intensive Care Medicine (SICM) Singapore, the Co-Chair of the National COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit Committee, and the Chair of the Asia Ventilation Forum”.

A/Prof Khoo Chin Meng

Dr Khoo Chin Meng is the current Head and Senior Consultant Endocrinologist in the Department of Medicine at the National University Hospital (NUH), Singapore, and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Singapore. He received his MBBS degree from the University of Malaya, Malaysia. He became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians, UK (MRCP) in 2002, then a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, UK (FRCP) in 2012. He was awarded a Fellowship of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS, Endocrinology) in 2007. He received his PhD in medicine in 2018.

He is also the current Director of the Investigational Medicine Unit at the National University Hospital and the Metabolic Phenotyping Unit at the National University of Singapore. His research interests are in insulin resistance, obesity, and diabetes mellitus. His PhD thesis examined the pathway to insulin resistance in humans. Besides research, he is actively involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate education. He is the current chair of Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and clinical lead of System Block Workgroup (SBW) preclinical lead in the Endocrine, Nutrition and Metabolism system block for the Yong Loo Ling School of Medicine (NUS) undergraduate program.

Dr Leonard Yeo

Leonard Yeo is a vascular Neurologist and is cross-trained as a neurointerventional specialist with a special interest in acute stroke management and intracranial atherosclerotic disease. He is currently employed as senior consultant in the National University Health System (NUHS). He is on the clinical competency committee for neurology, and serves as the vice-president of the Society of Neurovascular Intervention and Surgery, Singapore (SNVIS). He has authored over 240 peer-reviewed journal articles and over 100 conference presentations and book chapters. He is a medical advisor for several medtech startups.

Dr Lim Su Lin

Dr Lim Su Lin is the Chief Dietitian and Head of Therapeutics (Allied Health & Pharmacy) at the National University Hospital. Over her 30 years as a clinical dietitian, Dr Lim has gained renown in developing many innovative tools which have been published internationally and subsequently incorporated into mainstream practice. Her latest innovation is an effective weight management programme which combines a new Healthy Keto Diet, mobile apps, online health coaching and behavioural and lifestyle management, that has helped many who are overweight achieved significant weight loss and metabolic control. Su Lin has received numerous awards on her work in research, innovation and quality improvement. She was a recipient of the QUT’s Outstanding Doctoral Thesis and Outstanding Alumni Awards, as well as the National Day Awards Efficiency and Commendations Medals.

Dr Mamta Ruparel

Dr Mamta Ruparel attended Guys King’s and St Thomas’ medical school in London, and subsequently undertook postgraduate training in London and Cambridge, attaining specialist accreditation in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine. During this time, she developed a special interest in lung cancer and went on to do a PhD in Lung Cancer Screening in 2018 at University College London. She specifically looked at aspects of lung cancer risk, the radiological findings of CT screening and informed decision-making. She implemented and managed a lung cancer screening study recruiting over 1000 patients. She has published several papers in peer reviewed journals, and has been a member of the UK National Cancer Research Institute Clinical Studies Group and the National Institute of Health Research review committee. She transferred to Singapore in 2020 and has spent time working at Tan Tock Seng Hospital prior to taking up her post at National University Hospital. She is passionate about improving early detection, diagnostic pathways and outcomes for patients with lung cancer.

Dr Noreen Chan

Dr Noreen Chan obtained her medical training in Singapore, England and Australia, and after returning to Singapore, was part of the core group that set up advanced training in Palliative Medicine. She was Medical Director and CEO of Dover Park Hospice before joining the National University Hospital in 2008, where she is now Senior Consultant and Head of the Division of Palliative Care.

Her interests include pain and symptom management; the interface between Palliative care and Oncology; clinical decision making and ethical issues at the end of life; Spirituality in healthcare; and Palliative care education at all levels.

Prof Paul Anantharajah Tambyah

Paul Anantharajah Tambyah is currently Professor of Medicine at NUS and also Senior Consultant Infectious Diseases Physician at the National University Health System. After graduating from the NUS Medical School and completing military service in the Singapore Armed Forces Medical Corps, he went on to Infectious Diseases training at the University of Wisconsin under Dr Dennis Maki. Since returning to Singapore more than 25 years ago, he has been involved in a number of national and international committees and is currently deputy director of the NUS Infectious Diseases Translational Research Program and also President of the International Society for Infectious Diseases

Prof Yeoh Khay Guan

Professor Yeoh is Chief Executive of the National University Health System, in which capacity he leads an integrated academic health system including public primary care clinics, community, general, and tertiary hospitals, national specialty centers in cancer, cardiovascular, and oral health, and the National University of Singapore's medical, nursing, dental, and public health schools under one unified governance.

His concurrent appointments include the Kishore Mahbubani Professor in Medicine and Health Policy and Senior Vice President (Health Affairs), National University of Singapore. He practices as a Senior Consultant at the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, National University Hospital (NUH). He served as Dean of NUS School of Medicine from 2011 to 2018.

Professor Yeoh received his MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) from NUS in 1987. He trained in internal medicine and gastroenterology at NUH. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and Glasgow, and a member of the American Gastroenterology Association and American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Prof Benjamin Ong

Professor Benjamin Ong is Emeritus Consultant with the Division of Neurology, National University Hospital (NUH). His practise is in General Neurology with a special interest in neuroimmunology.

Currently, he serves as Chairman of the Health Sciences Authority (HSA), Chairman of the National Health Innovation Centre Singapore Board Oversight Committee (BOC), as well as a Board member of the Consortium for Clinical Research and Innovation, Singapore (CRIS). He has been a member of the Public Service Commission on 1 December 2020.

He was formerly Director of Medical Services, Ministry of Health (MOH), and prior to his MOH appointment, Prof Ong was the Chief Executive, National University Health System and Senior Vice President of Health Affairs at NUS. He has also held positions as Chairman, Medical Board at the NUH, Head of the Department of Medicine at NUS, as well as Chairman of the Integrated Health Information Systems Singapore.

He was also formerly Senior Vice President (Health Education and Resources) at the National University of Singapore.

Prof Ong was conferred the Public Administration Medal (Gold and Silver) and the Meritorious Service Medal for his contributions to the public service.

Dr Mok Shao Feng is an endocrinologist and is a firm believer of empowering and supporting patients in their journey of living with chronic diseases like diabetes mellitus. He completed a clinical fellowship in the field of Andrology in Concord Repatriation General Hospital in New South Wales, Australia in 2016 and holds special interest in the evaluation and management of male hypogonadism.

Dr Mok is also an avid educator who currently serves as the Programme Director of the NUHS Internal Medicine Residency Programme. He is particularly interested in developing clinical reasoning skills and improving assessment standards in medical education. He completed the Master in Healthcare Professional Education (MHPE) with Maastricht University in 2019.

Dr Clarice Choong

Dr Clarice Choong is a consultant haematologist at the Department of Haematology-Oncology, NCIS and Division of Haematology, Department of Laboratory Medicine, NUH. After receiving her undergraduate medical degree from the National University of Singapore (Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine) in 2013, she trained in internal medicine and obtained her membership to the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom in 2015. She undertook her specialty training in haematology under the Joint Commission of Specialist Training Singapore in 2019. In 2023, she obtained her fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologist of the United Kingdom (FRCPath). She is also a teaching core faculty with National University Health System Haematology Residency Programme and Assistant Professor in the department of Medicine of the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Her clinical and research interests are in anaemia and red cell disorders, transfusion medicine, myeloid diseases and geriatric haematology.

Dr Teoh is a Senior Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at the National University Hospital. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh and completed postgraduate training in respiratory and general internal medicine in the United Kingdom. His areas of special interest are pleural infection and thoracic ultrasound. He is currently the director of the Pulmonary Function Laboratory and an Associate Programme Director for the Internal Medicine residency programme. He was previously the Deputy Programme Director for final-year students at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
